This is a love story of me and my Tinkerbell, a free flying Congo African Grey parrot CAG , as we roamed about the mountains and forests and cities of Taiwan. She loves to go riding with me on the motorbike as she sit on a perch on the handle bar.
Later on shama Yingshiong joined me.

Full details of that and more are in that webpage, together with URLs to the relevant Flickr folders of hundreds of photos. Without those photos, what I wrote will never be believed
Now I am in Oman and taking care of Riamfada, a CAG who was given to me.
As with all love story, it is happy and sad.
I live a life with fully flighted birds. Perhaps you might
like to try that too.

Wow, it's amazing ! And what a pleasure to see all your photos, they are beautiful especially those of Oman. I' ve got a question : whats sort of bird is Riamfada (excuse me for my ignorance :rose: )? Thanks for all
Thank you my French friends,
I am sad the original thread was lost together with so much of what was written. Especially what I wrote here on Yingshiong.
It is good to be back here again.

Citation de: "cococharlotte"Oh, I'm sorry I wanted to talk about the second bird with a black head, he looks beautiful !
That little bird is a male white-rumped shama, one of the best songbird in the world. Shama lived in the forests and bushes of South East Asia.

Shama Yingshiong was caught from the jungle when he was 3 years old and was given to me when he was 5 years old. You can see from the daily blog I kept that he flew to me on recall within a month. Breeders of 4 decades of experience with shamas told me my photos are the first ever of a male shama landing on a human. I just think none of them thought of ever trying in the first place. And they had not met that birdwhisperer of Tsaoling that inspired me that much.
You can see how I adapted what I wrote in Tinkerbll Legacy to work with a shama instead.
I kept a diary, on a day by day, that showed the training so that he accept me as a friend.
The most important part is that I treated him with respect and dignity due to a sentient being and I accepted that he is my equal.
Shama Yingshiong was given to the Jurong Bird Park in May 2006. When I went back to see Yingshiong one year later in Jurong Bird Park, Yingshiong remembered me. You can read that in
Part 6 - Yingshiong & Tinkerbell - A good closure April 2008
http://shanlung.livejournal.com/2008/04/ (http://shanlung.livejournal.com/2008/04/%22%20onclick=%22window.open(this.href);return%20false;)
I have a deep soft spot in my heart for Yingshiong my beautiful feisty shama song bird. I still could not bring myself to write of his final handover to Jurong Bird Park.
After you finished my chronicles of YS, you cannot but accept that a tiny bird like him is also a sentient being.
You can hear him in these recordings.

Here are some of his videos
The intermediate recall

When I decided YS is to go back into his flightroom so Ivan the cat can be out, I just signal with my hand and tell YS ' go back'. You can see this sequence here, where YS flew back to his flight room and into his cage at my cue.
Yingshiong flies back on command
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVMbbxjjJqs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVMbbxjjJqs%22%20onclick=%22window.open(this.href);return%20false;)
The last video was most amusing to me. People in shama forums wrote out that it would be very bad to let shama out of the cage as hours had to be spend chasing the shama with nets to get him back to the cage and will stress the bird bady.
I told them then all I need was to ask YS to go back to his cage. The screams and hoots of laughter at my note was hilarious to me.
So I got my wife to shot that video of YS flying back and into his cage. You noticed no food reward given for that either. A deafening silence was the reply from all who had earlier hooted and laughed at me.
Shama are insectivores. So I tried to replicate their diet with much advice from people.
YS main diet will be the Yingshiong Mash I made, with TInkerbell Mash as key ingredient.
The insects I gave him are crickets, Suris (Pycnoscelus surinamensis), freshly molted meal worms and what I called as 'millis'.

People talked about gut loading the insects before feeding to birds. I talked about tissue loading of insects as well. The insects are only as good as the food you feed them with.
Folks in some bird forums were mighty displeased when I said I feed my roaches and crickets and millis better than many feed their birds and parrots. I felt they were annoyed as that was truly the case.
I used Tinkerbell mash to feed those insects. together with. What YS did not eat of his YS mash were given the next day to those insects so they will have yummy guts and yummy tissue which go back into Yingshiong.

Hello,
My english is not good enough to understand everything you wrote but te pictures and videos are magic.
The way you live with your birds and cats looks like freedom.
I'm very interested in freeflight and very impressed by what you can do with your birds.
Kétile
Kétile
Thank you! Your English is much better than my French.
Total free flight is very dangerous and I cannot recommend anyone to try that.
If you allow your bird to fly inside the house and the house secured properly, your bird
will have 95% of all the benefits from flying.
Part 2 - Tinkerbell Legacy that you can read in http://www.geocities.com/shanlung9/ (http://www.geocities.com/shanlung9/) will tell you how that can be done
My photos and descriptions of free flights can be enjoyed by everyone.
I enjoy seeing people doing rock climbing, and skiing down black diamond slopes. But I know I do not
have the training and the skill to do that.
In the same way, you can enjoy what I do without any risk to you in doing that.

Beautyfull fotos !!!
I understand what you mean. I couldn't climb a rock as well.
My bird can fly in my house almost all day long (when I am home), but it's always very small flights, I don't think we can compare it with freeflight.
But why it coudn't be possible to learn my bird freeflight, with the help of people who know exactly how to do it ?
It doesn't need pysicall aptitude, just a real knowledge but I'm ready to learn...
I don't want to lose my bird, I love him and want the best for him...
Kétile
Nothing is completely safe.
I am mentally prepared for the worse. Can you do that ?
First Tinkerbell, and then Riamfada was trained in harness and line in small steps by small steps before free flight.
They learned to fly in strong winds, in cross winds, in tail winds, in side winds, from high up to me down below, from down below to me high up above.
I did not just do recalls. I did very complex recalls. They fly to different perches with names and then fly back to me at home.
I hide in rooms and call them to do hide & seek recalls.
I watched them until I knew they do not spook easily, and knew they recover quickly from spooking.
The risk of accident is always there even with a well bonded and well trained bird. What if a hawk suddenly appear to chase your bird?
Read
Reflections on Riamfada at edge of the Empty Quarter and some rants on my solution to maximise the return of the bird.
http://shanlung.livejournal.com/112576.html (http://shanlung.livejournal.com/112576.html)
The risk of accidents must be accepted so you will be mentally prepared to act fast and act immediately on recovery.
I think many people became frozen during accidents and end up losing their bird.
Read an accident that happened to me with Riamfada and how I acted immediately.
Jebel Akhbar with Kat //Seifa Al Sheik - the Great Escape and recovery

Replies & thoughts of Seifa Great Escape // Cyrus Oriole // An iftar meal
http://shanlung.livejournal.com/103233.html (http://shanlung.livejournal.com/103233.html)
Be honest with yourself. Will you be able to react very fast in case of sudden accidents and you see your bird flying away?
And if you want the best for your bird, total free flight add only 0.1% of the benefit of flight.
Flying at home will give 95%
Flying with a good harness add 4.9%
read http://shanlung.livejournal.com/8284.html (http://shanlung.livejournal.com/8284.html) on training to use harness and how to make the best harness.
YOU MUST READ THE END PART WHERE I REPORTED ON ALL MY ACCIDENTS. DO YOU THINK YOU WILL BE AS LUCKY AS ME?
Can you handle Murphy (Murphy's Law) if Murphy is standing by your side?
Total free flight give you 0.1% and at great risk.
I wrote of that in
Riamfada free flights in villa // And around neighbourhood
http://shanlung.livejournal.com/121070.html (http://shanlung.livejournal.com/121070.html)
Please do not do what you see me do.
FREE FLIGHT IS LIFE AND DEATH PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS YOURSELF UNLESS YOU DO KNOW.
NEVER EVER FREE FLY WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE AS THIS CAN LEAD TO LOSS AND DEATH OF YOUR BIRD.
I have been thinking. Of free flights with Riamfada. But the last few times when I thought of it, my dear wife screamed. She screamed and cried loud enough to frighten the wits out of me , or back into me , which ever way that you choose.
A parrot truely need not do any freeflights. Allowing him/her to fly inside your home made safe for that will give 95% of all the benefits from flying.
Allowing your parrot to fly in harness and leash, might add 4.9% more. But that being said, the sheer pleasure to you of taking your parrot outdoors with you and to fly cannot be imagined. If you have prepared yourself by first letting your parrot fly in semi free flight conditions (flying in big enclosed space eg gym or in big hall) , and then taking careful small steps outside in harness and short leash, that should be safe enough.
Long distance harnessed flights should be after you and your parrot thoroughly trained together, flying your parrot in head winds, tail winds, cross winds, shifty wind conditions, from high to low, and low to high.
Do not do free flights. That 0.1% benefit to your parrot is not worth the nightmare if things go wrong.
You know Riamfada had been on deliberate free flights.
Free flight is dangerous, extremely dangerous with any kind of parrot, and especially a grey.
Free flight might add 0.1% to the benefits of flight to your parrot. But the adrenaline rush to you is immense. That comes from living dangerously, knowing Murphy might just turn up.
I know with the coming departure, my mood might not be good. But I felt I could control that enough.
I also thought back to Riamfada flights with me. She clearly shown she could think on her wings. The videos of her turning back to my wife when she could not first find me was heartening. And of her flying and turning back to the wall , and then heading to me was heartening as well.

http://shanlung.livejournal.com/118669.html (http://shanlung.livejournal.com/118669.html)
Then that unscheduled free flight at the beach when that knot to that swivel joint unravelled and she did that glorious freeflight and returned to me had to be considered too.
Her spooking got even more controlled in the villa, just a short flight away before returning to me.
In the villa, Riamfada would so often fly to me uncalled, went back to her many perch to do her thing, and fly again to me. In all our walks in last couple of months, she never showed any desire to leave me. And if she decided on parroty jokes, how many more parroty jokes could she play on me. I decided I could accept her parroty jokes.
And she knew our neighbourhood so well now from all the neighbourhood walks we had done.
I decided to go on neighbourhood walks earlier today. I noticed the light faded too much by time we went out at 530pm. So today, we went out of the house at 5pm.
Riam was harnessed and leashed as we went around the mulberry bush.
Thoughts of free flight hit my mind. Hit it hard today 24 September.
I decided my wife screamed too much. Before she opened her mouth to scream, I premptively told her to shut up. Got her to hold the rod/reel. I then took the leash off Riamfada's harness.
I saw from corner of my eye my wife opened her mouth, as to scream. I told her screaming might well spook Riam, and to my satisfaction, saw her closing her mouth.
OK, I understand most of you say and will read the "liens?"(http...) you gave.
I know that recall training isn't simple recall and I trained my bird from up to me and from down to me, I recalll him outside with a harness.
What I don't understand is: if freeflight is only 0.5% of benefice for the bird and a lot of risk, why do YOU do it ???
I don't polemic, it's just a question.
I find that is very interesting talking wit you...

Why do some people do rock climbing without any safety harness and lines?
Why do some people climb Mount Everest without oxygen?
Why do some people do BASE jumps from edge of tall buildings and cliffs?
How can I give you a meaningful answer?
How about stupidity?
OK, I understand, exept that in the exemples you give, maybea, it's the taste of adrenaline and risk but for themself that can motive some people.
The risk of loosing our birds or the pleasure of seeing them flying in the sky ? What is the motivation, were does the adrenaline come from ???

We can talk about adrenaline rush to the head and the heart.
We can talk about beauty and soul desire.
All those involved great risks.
There are some aspects of life with no rational answers.
I can only give warnings that what I do should not be done without careful thoughts and with clear knowledge of the risks.
I totally agree with you.

Yep, un peu facile...Sans compter qu'il a beaucoup fait voler son gris au harnais avec une longue ficelle, ce que moi je juge bien plus dangereux que de le laisser voler librement...

Hi Shanlung,
Once again, very interesting and I think very true.

It's always exciting to read your story.
Sometimes my english isn't good enough to understand all the details of the story.
I didn't understand why you say that Sieben lost his life.
He's alive, isn't he ??
I have to take the time for reading all the stories you wrote before.
To me, it's like novels.

Kétile
There is this English saying
A cat has nine livesI do not know if that is the same in French.
I joked on this before on Dommie. That I was so angry at him and going to kill him that he lost a life.
But since a cat has nine lives, Dommie remained alive.
Same for Sieben, who of course, is still very much alive.
Aaaaaaah!! OK, in France we say the same, that the cats would have 9 lives :icon_wink:
:icon_mrgreen:
In China, cats have 9 lifes too.
If you keep Italian or Spanish cats, you must be more careful as the cats there have 7 lifes.
And if you are in the Arabic or Turkish world, you must be even more careful as
their cats have only 6 lifes.
Sieben now has only 7 lifes left.
He is lucky to be a Chinese cat.

Thanks again.
What is a lap cat ??
A lap cat meant the cat must remain on the lap and be controlled by hands on the cat.
This was the way I introduced Ivan to Libai. That part where my hands were on Ivan meant I could not shoot the photos then. Shortly after that, when Ivan was more relaxed, I could take photos of his early encounters with Libai.
Best seen in this report.

Hi Shanlung,
Thanks again for the story of Jackie and for this very interessant article about the ambiguity about this question: how to be the most efficient to preserve our natural environnement.
Otherwise, the way of eating of Jackie made me laugh a lot too, how can he be such a messy eater ??? :icon_eek: :rigole49:
What kind of bird is Jackie ?? Do you know the name in french ?? Is he a kind of "mainate" ??
I'm waiting for the evolution of Jackie with the clicker.
Thank you very much for sharing.
I will try to translate for the other peope of the forum, some of the articles or other things you wrote and that I find very important to think and discuss about.
As you are very generous not only in text but in fotos too, I leave you a little pictures of my birds, Mauresque et Fergus, couple of alexandrine parots.
They are very clever and friendly with all the family.
Moreover, I was wondering ? Why do you think about having only one bird ??
I guess you have a lot of time for your animals but did you have several birds in the same time yet ?

Très chouettes photos, Kétile, merci.

Moya
Merci Moya,
En ce moment, on a de la chance, il fait vraiment très doux, donc si il n'y a pas de vent, je les sors, pas trop longtemps évidemment. :icon_wink:
Ketile,
You have a beautiful flock. I visited a friend in New Zealand who had an Alexandrine. The grace of the flight, like a dolphin weaving in the air up and down, was breath taking.
In my present circumstances where I might have to leave, I cannot have more than one bird. Even at that, you know I chose birds that are local and can be released if I cannot find anyone to care for the bird outside the cage and be allowed to fly. You know not many people can do that.
Perhaps one day when I know I will be permanent in a place that I like, I will then have many birds.
Jackie is a Greater Indian Hill Mynah(Gracula religiosa intermedia). I am sure you can find what that is called in French with the help of the Latin scientific name.
He is a sub specie of mainate.

Hello Shanlung,
Thanks again for sharing your experiences with us.
To me, all these stories are very interesting and different from what we use to read.
Do you mind if I translate some of these stories in french because many french people are very bad in foreign languages, even english :pendu:
I think this way much more people could benefit of your experience and the articles you post.
Kétile
Ketile,
Not only I happily give you the permission to translate some or any of what I write into French. I am honored by your request.
Free Internet translation by Google or Babelfish is not good.
Similar requests like yours from Russia, China, Japan, Israel and Arabic countries have been asked and gladly given by me.
It felt strange to me that while I wrote in English, I have more non English readers than English readers.
OK thanks.
I agree that internet translation are very bad and nobody understand nothing :Bahh:
Ketile,
I am a student and not an expert. I found the more I learned, the more I still need to learn.
I wrote a lot on my journey of learning to live with birds. If I am asked to name 3 of what I wrote that I feel to be
most useful, I will say the 3 below.

You might consider doing that for your parrots too.

Thank you Shanlung.
I will read these texts and translate conscientiously.
For the moment I'm translating the story when tou lost Tinkerbell. I didn't finished yet so I don't evven know the end of the story myself.
To me, it's gripping and I think it will be the same for the other people.
Thanks again for sharing your experience and mistakes with us.
Sometime, people are ready to share their success but not their mistakes :icon_wink:
Ketile,
When I wrote of the loss of Tinkerbell at BanTienYen, I wrote that as a memorial to her.
I thought she had died, and her spirit came to me in a dream during my search for her.
I was so broken hearted when I woke up. I cried and cried. I refused to give up the search
for her. I continued on as a act of atonement. Which ended up with Tinkerbell recovery as later explained
in a later report.
That report is a lot easier to read now as obviously, Tinkerbell was recovered and came back to all of us.
At that time when that was first written, that was very difficult for Tinkerbell friends all over the world to read.
And even more difficult for me to write.
I can imagine how painfull it was.
I will finish the translation, at least for me.
If you prefer that I don't put it in the forum I understand but I think that would make people think twice before doing free flight without the help of someone who know.
Now I know that the end of the story will make me cry too :icon_cry:
Ketile,
When I wrote to you about free flight, you recalled how much I stressed that you should read of that BanTienYen incident. All who think about free flights should read the accidents that I encountered.
People who only think good things and happy things must also bear in mind bad things and nightmares can happen too.
I was lucky to have Tinkerbell back, and Riamfada too.
Feel free to post that translation that you have done here and send that to your friends.
I tried to learn French, but that is a very difficult language for me. I would love to read The Count of Monte Cristo and Les Liaisons dangereuses in French.
I will appreciate a copy so I know how that look like in French. And will try to read that in French and improve my understanding of your beautiful language.
Hi Shanlung,
I'm sending a translation of Tinkerbell's loss. I post it day by day.
The name of the post is "Shanlung and Tinkerbell" in the section "perroquet café".
Can you copy this post when it will be finished or de you prefer I send it to you by mail or somehow.
Don't worry if my english is not very good, I think the translation is OK. It's much more easier for me to translate english in french than to write in english.
Kétile
I will be happy to read that here.

And try to improve my French

Poor Jackie.
But as you say the injury doesn't look so bad on the last photo.
We're waiting for some good news
I am sincerely sorry for what happened to your bird. His injury is impressive and I hope it will heal quickly.
My French friends,
Thank you for your concern and well wishes.
In a way it was lucky that happened on Chinese New Year where everything everywhere every shops were closed. CNY in predominant Chinese countries will be like your Christmas, New Year, Easter and Bastille Day all rolled into one.
That was why I had to rely on nature and nature alone. In the photo, especially even more gory photos in the Flickr folder, Jackie muscles were clearly exposed. I nearly wanted to suture that tear in the skin, and I would have if shops were opened to buy those needles and sutures.
I was really surprised at how rapid the wound healed as can be seen from the photos. On the 3rd day, day of report, the edges of the skin drew together already.
And by today, it was even better than yesterday.
I can only guess if a bird is healthy and given exercises , the bird can heal himself.
The sad part to Jackie is that since he is so well on the path to recovery, I be cutting his diet back to 30 JM & 30 FP instead of the 45 JM & 45 JM for the past few days.
But he is out often with me today and getting all the wonderful bread morsels playing and flying to me.
Happily, you didn't suture him. Maybea he would trust you less after that.
As you say he might heal faster without putting anything on th injury

Hello again Ketile and other french friends here.
Time passed very quickly in Qatar , Doha. That work is hard and with just Friday as a weekend, working 6 days of the week, time passed even faster.
My old laptop finally died, and with that, many of the webpages such as perroquet.biz.

Jackie is doing very well with my friend Cyrus.
I am staying in a place that will not allow any animals or birds.
Above was written on late June. If you had followed me, you will know that having bird, any bird in my life, gives me the energy to write.
Without birds, I very seldom write.
My wife flew over to visit me for a week. She flew yesterday to Muscat, Oman and she is now staying with the family looking after Riamfada.
My wife reported that Riamfada vocalised and talked a lot now. She will fly to Doha and be with me for another week before flying back to Singapore.

How to make harness here
http://shanlung.livejournal.com/104066.html (http://shanlung.livejournal.com/104066.html)
Mr Yu made harness which do not look very nice. Mr Yu harness is not loose at the neck, I think
because he was afraid Tinkerbell might escape. Mr Yu did not understand my design is very safe..
I understand his fear and I have to respect his fear and his love for Tinkerbell.
I did not wish to hurt his feelings by asking for harness that I made .
Very good job ! It's very elegant, handy and seems to be safed indeed !
Thanks for the link ! But my 10 fingers are not so dexterous than yours :icon_e_biggrin:
It's always a pleasure to read you and have news of your parrots ! You have made a great job with your harness.
Thank you my french friends,
My returning to be with Tinkerbell require very much the good will of Mr Yu who is my good friend. I cannot allow that relationship with Mr Yu to be damaged by me. I had hoped by my examples I gave him in 2011 that he would make better harnesses. I could not, and would not critise him for his attempts. At least he is better than Titeshuya in that he did make harness and use the harness.
Harness making is not that difficult. I actually have ten thumbs despite what the photos tell you of my hands. Do give that a try.
I thought you might like an earlier posting I made just before going to Taiwan.
A very different kind of bird was hunted by me. And the photos there might delight you all too, even if the bird is not a parrot.
I was searching for a place I might like to retire in.

Hi Shanlung !
:icon_biggrin:
And what about Old Nick ??? :stress-ronge-les-ongles-95:
Thanks for the photos, they're wonderfull.
I have kicked Old Nic for One miraculous year, five incredible months, six luvly days, 16 bloody hours, 28 misc minutes and 35 odd seconds. of cold turkey after about 45++ years of smoking. 26707 cigarettes not smoked, saving $14,021.70. Life saved: 13 weeks, 1 day, 17 hours, 35 minutes.
I thought I should mention in here.
A bit of the background to that. You knew I given up Yingshiong the white rumped shama to the Jurong Bird Park in 2006. I refused blank cheque offers so that he could fly in huge aviaries in JBP.
I went back to see him in 2008
Shama Yingshiong - Final Closure (http://shanlung.livejournal.com/2008/04/10/)
Then I was there and wrote of that about a year ago uncertain if I seen Yingshiong
New camera at Jurong Bird Park // Shades of Yingshiong (http://shanlung.livejournal.com/141331.html)
I was afraid of asking for Yingshiong as that was so many years ago, even if it seem to me just a short while back. What if I was told Yingshiong died or they at the JBP do not know what I was talking about. After all, they have thousands of birds, bigger and more valuable than a tiny white rumped shama.
I now cut to a recent posting I did in my facebook
You know I do not have birdies now and not have any until I find that place I will retire in where ever that might be. I thought my interactions with birdies will be restricted to what I can shoot in my camera even though I got myself a year pass into Jurong Bird Park. I also got a year pass into Singapore Zoo , and a year pass into Gardens by the Bay. But perhaps my interactions with birds might be more than just looking at them. I accepted an offer to be a Docent of Wildlife Reserves Singapore , an offer made to me I suspect largely because I am a year pass holder and not because of me as Shanlung. That will give me free and unlimited access into the Zoo and JBP. I am still undergoing training to be Docent in the JBP. That depends also on my being able to pass the tests they conduct. And my being in Singapore long enough (remember I am about to go on my walkabout to check out retirement places). In a strange way, I will be having a lot to do with all kinds of parrots from African greys to Hyacinth Macaws, white rumped shamas to green leaf birds, and Hornbills, and raptors and more. See what Jurong Bird Park is about. I strongly suggest that those planning to visit JBP for the first time should allocate an entire day here at the least. You might even see and talk to me as one of your guide into the bird world.

I was assigned to the station of my choice and into the JBP. In last weekend, 22 March 2014, I and others were at the JBP for station training. Part of the training was a guided walk into the South East Asian aviary. When we were there, I saw a white rumped shama flying in the huge walk in aviary and not in the side aviaries of that SEA exhibit. That shama flew in front of me a couple of times.
After that walk and the training session was over, I finally gathered my courage and asked that guide how long he was in JBP. If he told me he was there for 5 years or so, I would not ask if he known Yingshiong. He told me he was there for 15 years.
I then asked if he knew of Yingshiong with my heart in my mouth. To my surprise, he told me yes, he know of Yingshiong. And that he was flying about in that huge walk in aviary. He asked how I knew. I then told him I am the Shanlung who gave him up. He smiled and said that yes, he been to my web pages a long time ago but had not known I was among the latest batch of Docents.
I smiled too. That likely it was Yingshiong that flew a couple of time in front of me.
And since I am a Docent there, I will be seeing a lot more of Yingshiong.
And I bought my ticket to Taiwan , Apr 10-24, where I will be seeing Tinkerbell again.
On the 26 March, I wrote that I might have seen Yingshiong my old shama. Go back to that entry if you have not seen that.
Anyway, today on 30 March, was another of the Docent training at JBP from 1 to 3 pm. When that was over, I walked out of JBP with the others in my group. I was not certain if I want to check if YS was there and if he still knew me. I was a bit of a coward. I then retraced my steps and went back into JBP. I am still a Friend of Birds and a yearly pass holder to walk into JBP and Singapore Zoo.
I was glad not many people were in the South East Asia rain forest exhibit. With a heavily planted over center section walk in aviary and with hundreds of birds of different color and sizes there.
I walked and called "Yingshiong come come come". Nothing came. I tried that a few times , glad no one was there. I reached the far end and saw a little shama high above me on a branch. I was not even sure if that was Yingshiong as those tiny white rumped shama looked so much alike.

I stood there watching him for ten minutes and decided that could not be Yingshiong. He then dived from his branch down towards me and did a circular flight about me and landed on the ground about 3-4 feet in front of me. He then flew to the side and perched there.

No other birds which were not even as shy as a shama would have done that. He sang very softly to me. I mentioned the very soft singing of YS before in http://www.shanlung.com/shamasong.html (http://www.shanlung.com/shamasong.html)
I did not have my Olympus EPL5.
That camera gave up the ghost last night when I went with my wife to celebrate Earth hour with Spiderman https://www.facebook.com/events/1425245187720226/ (https://www.facebook.com/events/1425245187720226/)
I was going to take that to Olympus repair center to see if that camera of just one year can be resurrected.
I only had my Nokia state of art phone of 7 years ago. I resisted the arm twisting done by my wife on me to take her Iphone. That old Nokia could not take good photos. I had to be very near YS to take the photos you are seeing.
YS then flew 15 meters away to a branch on high tree. That was near a bench so I went there to sit and see what else that shama would do.
In a while, he flew down nearer to me. I decided I would not even try to get YS to land on me as he needed to be wild.

I remained contended he flew down near me. After another 30 minutes or so, I said my goodbye to him and that we will meet again.
What a beautiful story ! That's incredible that after so long it recognized you !
You should feel very moved by a such meeting !
That's the proof birds have lot of mind !
:bravo:
titeshuya,
Thank you.
From what I wrote a day later in my facebook . But should be here in this thread too.[/size]
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I felt like a fool. After all, I could not recognise Yingshiong at first. I wanted to believe that was YS but dared not believe that was YS and therefore thought that was not YS at first. YS must have seen thousands of humanoids walking there. And to a Caucasian, Chinese all look alike and with Chinese, all Caucasians look alike. What about to a tiny bird? Wouldnt humans all look the same to the birdie? The last time YS was with me was until early 2006 when I went to Riyadh. And for visit in 2008. Clearly it was YS who recognised me to have done that circling flights around me and landed in front of me, and flew about near me, about 3 feet from me.YS showed better memory than I had. And when he showed he remembered me, I did not say "Yingshiong come come come" anymore. He was already there. And much as I like the thought of him landing on me, I had to restrain myself and have minimum interactions with YS for his own long term good. I hate the thought that if I got him used to landing on me, he might land on other visitors. But that being said, YS never landed on my wife and friends much as they tried even with bribing YS shamelessly.
